WHADDA I DO? |
I'm a bioinformatics scientist at Genentech where I'm primarily
responsible for using computational structural biology methods
to mining databases for new members of pharmaceutically
relevant protein families. I'm also the chair of the Research
Computing, which means that I'm responsible for both
day-to-day operations and long-term architecture directions
for Genentech's Research department (~800 people).
Before Genentech, I was a postdoctoral scientist at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. I had my fingers in several pies, but I was primarily involved in automated pattern discovery in protein sequences which were related by function (spat and references therein), or structure (such as FSSP families; unpublished). In 1998, I completed a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics with Jay Ponder at the Washington University School of Medicine. My Ph.D. thesis, Potential Function Smoothing with Applications to Molecular Docking is available online [ abstract | thesis ]. In 1994, I completed a Masters degree in Computer Science through The Institute for Biomedical Computing at Washington University. My thesis, An Object-Oriented System for Automated DNA Sequence Analysis, is available online [ thesis ]. The source code for the system is public domain. Please see my Curriculum Vitae [PDF | HTML] and my research interests. And, way back in 1990 (before bell bottoms inexplicably became cool again) I graduated from UCSD with a BA in molecular biology. I worked at The Salk Institute for three years (two as an undergrad). Ocean-view dorm rooms and labs can't be beat. I've got a few hobbies. I've been an instrument rated private pilot since 1990 and have about 500 hours, mostly single-engine. I was an avid windsurfer and skier (alpine and cross country), but then I got plopped in the midwest and that was the end of that. I play ultimate regularly, and volleyball and Go whenever I can. I'm a linux evangelist and occasionally dream in perl. |
